Someone broke into my house.

They left everything in ruin.

The lock on the door was farced open with a stolen key – I must’ve left it unlocked…

I cut my feet with broken glass,

I look at the damage in disbelief,

Because there’s no way he would to this.

The robber took my will–

I found it torn in pieces.

He took my pure diamonds–

They were ripped away from their place.

The robber took my crystal flower–

It’s now shattered in the driveway.

He took everything precious,

And left chaos in his wake.

I call upon someone who I trust,

She’s older and wiser than I.

I tell her I was robbed a week ago, and from the corner of her kind smile asks,

“Why not call the police?”

How do I tell her–that in my disbelief–

I sat there for 48 hours

Thinking it didn’t happen to me?

And the evidence was gone.

Would she even believe me?

Then askes she with some kind of smile, “did you leave your door unlocked?

Because if you did, of course you got robbed. Or if he had a key, no matter how he got it, he was invited.

In fact–I don’t think it was a robbery.”

And I hung up the phone.

Because I’m sure that she was taught that it was your fault

If the door was unlocked or

If they had a key.

And if it is your fault, it’s not a robbery.

And so I remember how he stole his first key.

He needed some help, then he took it from me.

And he entered my home, but didn’t steal anything.

He tracked mud on my carpet

And he touched all my things.

but I forgave him because I thought he didn’t know what he was doing.

I begged him not to do it again,

He nodded and swore–of course he wouldn’t!

Of course he wouldn’t enter my house–in fact he left the key!

Of course he would take off his shoes–mud was a sinful thing!

Of course he wouldn’t touch anything precious–he knows it’s all I have!

But he did, because he is a liar,

And I forgave him too many times.

I tried to change the locks before,

I just didn’t know how.

What if he got angry?

And tried to burn down my house?

I tried to change the locks again–

somehow he still had the key.

And when I told him the final time, his key wouldn’t work,

he forced the door open

and he robbed me.

And I sat there broken

convinced I wasn’t robbed.

I lied to myself:

“Of course I wasn’t robbed.”

But my house was broken,

The door forced open,

And everything precious is gone.

And what scares me most

Is that too many people

Understand and Know:

I’m not talking about a Fucking house.
